IMAP POP3 SMTP

This article explains which incoming server (IMAP / POP3) and outgoing srver (SMTP) you must use when you are using an e-mail address hosted by Kinamo. This article is applicable to Kinamo shared hosting customers, dedicated hosting customers, cloud server hosting and server hosting customers with e-mail addresses.

When should I use IMAP or POP3?

Your e-mail address can be configured using either the IMAP protocol or POP3 protocol.

IMAP: messages remain on the server

If you configure your account as an IMAP account, all e-mail messages remain on the server.
This means that you will have to set up e-mail on every device as an IMAP account: this allows you to check your mailbox on desktops, tablets, smartphone and webmail without removing them from the server.
Be careful: the storage space of your IMAP mailbox is limited, be sure to remove unwanted messages and clear your trash bin!

POP3: messages are downloaded and removed from the server

If you setup your account as a POP3 account, all messages are downloaded to your device and WILL BE REMOVED from the server, with each e-mail check for new messages.
If you first check mail (send / receive) on your desktop computer and later on check e-mail on your tablet or smartphone, your mailbox will be empty: all messages were first downloaded to your computer in your e-mail program, and removed from the server.
