SSL certificates by Symantec

Symantec

In 2010, Verisign sold its SSL certificate branch to the Symantec group, known to the public mainly through its Norton antivirus software. Symantec has progressively rebranded Verisign's SSL certificates under its own name since. Symantec's SSL division, which includes GeoTrust and Thawte, is the world's second most use certificate authority in absolute numbers, but maintains a strong lead in the high-end market segment, with only notable competition from GlobalSign.

Advantages

  • High-end certificate authority
  • Market leader in the high-end segment
  • Symantec security services integration

Symantec's the darling of the world's top 1000 websites, and its daily security scans make its certificates highly appropriate for websites collecting sensitive data.

The differences

  • Site-in-Search technology
  • Widely trusted Norton Secured seal
  • Daily security scan of your site
  • No free non-www domain
  • No unlimited server licenses
  • Restricted product offer

Symantec's name and additional features make it an excellent choice for high-end websites, but keep in mind that Symantec's prices follow suit.

's opinion

Symantec has a rock-solid reputation and a peerless trust factor, but maintains inflated prices and a rigid licensing structure. If price is not an obstacle, Symantec meets all expectations. Competitor GlobalSign may offer more bang for buck elsewise.
