What is a Qualified Website Authentication Certificate (QWAC)?

Category: All about SSL certificates | SSL technical

A Qualified Website Authentication Certificate (QWAC) is a specially qualified digital SSL/TLS certificate that can be used for the European eIDAS guidelines. QWAC certificates are issued by a so-called Qualified Trust Services Provider (QTSP) such as Globalsign or Sectigo and comply with strict validation standards as defined in the eIDAS directive, determined by the European Union.

The eIDAS directive focuses mainly on electronic signatures, electronic trust seals, electronic time codes, electronic registered mail and website authentication.

The purpose of a QWAC is to identify, according to a validated path through the QTSP, which natural or legal person is behind an SSL/TLS certificate.

Why do I need a QWAC?

Qualified Website Authentication Certificates are typically applicable for:

  • Payment service providers (PSPs) that need to make their data known to customers and businesses and must comply with the PSD2 and other guidelines for banks
  • Financial institutions that need to communicate with PSPs and must comply with PSD2 and other guidelines for banks
  • Any entity that needs to comply with the eIDAS guidelines
